Diagnostic Nerve Block
Sometimes after history, physical exam, lab tests and x-rays it is difficult to determine what is causing the pain. A diagnostic nerve block is a test whereby a small amount of local anesthetic is injected near a nerve to see if for a short time the pain subsides. If the pain goes away then certain conclusions can be made to determine what the specific treatment will be. These nerve blocks add time to overall workup but aid in proper treatment and at the same time prevent the use of improper treatment.
